the blurb

Poet Parker put the past behind her. At least she thought she did. Life on the streets wasn’t what she had in mind for her forever and she jumped at the chance to join Mystic Caravan Circus when an invitation was extended. She didn’t look back. That was ten years ago, and now Poet is going back to the exact area she used to haunt … and she’s nervous. The friends she left behind are scattered. Some are dead. Some have moved on to other things. Some turned out to be something else entirely. Others simply disappeared into the wind. Unfortunately for Parker, forgetting isn’t easy … especially when a group of banshees start infringing on Mystic Caravan’s territory and the creatures seemingly have ties to the people Poet left behind. Between the reapers also working the case – a crazy family called the Grimlocks who can’t stay out of trouble – and the guilt weighing Poet down given the way she fled, she has her hands full. Someone is controlling the banshees, stealing girls from the streets and creating a merry band of monsters. It’s up to Poet to find out who and protect two street girls who remind her of herself. Poet doesn’t want to look back but she has no choice … what she finds might be more evil than she ever imagined.

  1. Freaky Reapers is a crossover with the author’s Aisling Grimlock series.
  2. This book has a lot of depth, with a lot of issues that are both painful and emotional for Poet.
  3. I came away from this one having a whole new appreciation for who Poet is and the woman she’s become.
  4. Her strength of character is so beautiful, so powerful.
  5. Kade’s constant need to assert himself as Poet’s alpha protector continues to annoy me, as does his transformation into a man-baby when she acts with autonomy.

Freaky Reapers is a crossover with the author’s Aisling Grimlock series.

The circus is in Detroit, not far from the neighborhood where Poet once lived on the streets. When Max, the owner, offered her a job and a home with the circus, she took it. Dangerous things were happening on the streets, and the circus provided her safety. But she was never comfortable with the way she left, not knowing what happened to the others she’d grown to care for. So she’s determined to search them out, to do what she can to help them, to make up for having left without a trace. But it’s never easy to go back, especially not in a world like the one in this series.

This book just might be my favorite in the series thus far. There was a lot of depth in this book as readers learn more about Poet’s background and her time on the streets. There was real pain there, real fear. The guilt she felt clearly ate at her more than even she realized. This one really takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster.

My only complaint is Kade. I think he’s just going to be that one character that I will never truly be able to like. He claims to love Poet, but it feels like he also treats her like a weak child who isn’t capable of taking care of herself. He’s cast himself as her alpha protector, even though she’s powerful and strong and wholly capable. And the moment she shows any autonomy, doing something he deems “potentially dangerous,” he whines and pouts and generally acts like a man-baby. But I enjoy this series too much to let his character sway me.

Read this if you love cozy mysteries with a paranormal twist, quirky characters, and a darker edge.

About Amanda M. Lee

When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn’t up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer — although I had no idea the effort that would entail.
Not only am I a writer now, but I’m a writer in several different mediums. I’m a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
