an excerpt
An EMT waits patiently as the door is unlocked before disappearing inside.
The detective holds up a finger as if asking me to wait a minute. I stand there awkwardly, aware of the small crowd gathering to see what the fuss is about. A uniformed officer moves them back with an authoritative tone.
The detective emerges moments later and shows me a close-up of a woman’s face.
The angle he chose makes the picture look like an arty amateur selfie. The damage to her face is almost hidden, but a sliver of blood edges into the shot. Though it just happened, it’s clear that the girl in the photo is dead. Her eyes will never open again, resting heavily like windows that have fused together from being shut for too long. Her face is relieved of expression, the stillness of death taking the sharpened angles of her cheeks and slackening her jaw. I can tell she hasn’t been dead for long.
Cassandra and Zoe look at the image over the detective’s shoulder. He retracts it a little, as if he doesn’t want too many people to see her yet. Maybe he thinks we’re involved and doesn’t want to compromise the investigation. Or he just wants a chance to tell her family first.
Waves of nausea ebb deep in my stomach, growing into a cascade before I can stop them. They spill over in a rush and I turn and duck my head into a pot plant, releasing the contents of my stomach.
The detective looks at me with an expression somewhere between sympathy and repulsion, waiting until I’ve composed myself before speaking again.
“Is she your friend?” he asks, but the question is clearly a formality because Zoe is swaying, unsteady on her feet, and not just from the alcohol. She emits a deep cry of grief before being led away by one of the EMTs. I hadn’t noticed them come in, but suddenly there are people everywhere. I watch as two of them disappear into the cordoned-off bathroom while another stands to the side, redirecting people to use alternative restrooms instead.
A look passes between me and Cassandra, each waiting for the other to confirm it, just in case we’ve got it wrong.
“It’s her,” I say. “It’s Isla.”
