The Overloaded Suitcase

by Natalie Anderson

I admit I’m not that much of a clothes horse, I haven’t got an up-to-the-minute wardrobe, heck, not that many clothes in my wardrobe at all! I tend to live in that dreadful writer/Mom attire of trackies and/or Mom-jeans, plus tee and with a dress or two for a fancy occasion hanging at the back. But somehow, when I go away and I tend to pack far too much – more trackies, jeans, shorts, skirts, tops and fancy frock – half of which I never wear ordinarily but that I pack and take ‘just in case’. Of course, I never end up wearing half the items in the bag!

When I was researching for my Antarctic-set novella MELT, I read blogs of people currently down on the ice and went to the tourist attraction that’s based here in Christchurch which has all kinds of displays (from machinery, to
penguins, history of the explorers to the food they eat down there). So I learned that when travelling to the ice from here in New Zealand you get ‘kitted out’ with all your special Extreme Weather Gear – pure survival stuff. You go to a special room at the headquarters a few days prior to your trip and the experts there give you all the clothing you’re going to need depending on what your job is down there – so the scientists doing work out in the field get given more and different gear to the support staff working in the kitchen in the main base. And it’s some full on stuff – one guy had to take ELEVEN pairs of gloves for his four month stint! ELEVEN – all different. And the gloves were just the beginning – then there’s boots, trousers, jackets and all the insulation layers – they’re really into layering it seems!

Can you imagine packing eleven pairs of gloves for a trip away?! Imagine the size of your pack?! But I’m thinking the people down there actually USE all this gear – unlike me and my usual packing disasters…

So what about you, are you a pro-packer who can get away with a tiny carry- on bag for a two-week trip, or are you like me and have a giant case in the cargo hold for a two-night city break?!

When two frozen hearts collide…

Emma Reed closed her heart to love years ago after a lifetime spent getting kicked
around foster homes and bad relationships. Now she’s on a mission to prove she
deserves her recent award to paint a mural for a research base in Antarctica.
Nothing and no one is going to get in her way.

After months working in recovery zones around the world, Hunter Wilson planned
to escape everything this holiday season by rebuilding a lab at the Kiwi Research
Base. Alone. No to family, no to fun. It’s isolation not intimacy he’s aching for. But
when he sees the determined artist, that ache becomes an urge – after all, shouldn’t
someone show her what two people can do with twenty-four hours of brilliant
sunlight?

In the coldest place on earth, even the most frozen hearts can melt.

    Hi Natalie,
Nice post. I am soon going on vacation to Tallinna, Estonia and I am trying not to pack far too much. DH said that only handluggage, so that we can move faster in the airport and reach the ship in time. Right now it is 27minus celsius here and it is better to have a lot of layers beneath your clothes, specially because I bike aroud the year.

I have only Kindle for pc and I don’t understand much about downloadable software programs. :dazed:
