an excerpt

Aemon’s “place” had a very odd feeling to it.

Similar to the vibration in my bones in the tunnel, it was just off in a way I couldn’t put my finger on. That wasn’t to say that the home at the end of the lane wasn’t completely gorgeous—it was—but I had a feeling we weren’t in Kansas anymore.

Maybe it was the turrets or the sheer size of the place or the gardens leading up to the biggest fucking house I’d ever seen, but I felt like I stuck out like a sore thumb. Was I going to have to curtsey at some point, because it didn’t matter that I had taken all the etiquette courses possible, I was not a lady.

“Come on, Flower,” Aemon urged, pulling me behind him at a quick clip. “I want to show you my home.”

Had anyone melted the ice around my heart with a single sentence before? This was Aemon’s home. Not a house, not a property. His home. My reluctant feet picked up speed.

The grounds were beautiful. Ancient trees reached for the heavens as thick moss cushioned our steps. Clusters of wildflowers dotted the field and bees buzzed lazily from one to another. There didn’t seem to be a rush, no urgency that weighed down every step and every heartbeat.

“Where are we?” It had to be another country if not a whole other continent. And how had we gotten here if he couldn’t go over an ocean? How was it daytime?

Aemon just smiled as the gates opened to admit us. “Promise you won’t freak out?”

That did nothing for the flock of bats masquerading as butterflies in my stomach, stealing the peace that had just taken root.

“No.” He knew better than to ask me that. When had I ever not freaked out?

Never. The answer was never.

He stopped us, hooking an arm around me and pulling me close. Aemon was the only one who could do that and have it not feel pretentious.

And no, I was not thinking about why he could do that and no one else could, either.
