this week’s question

Who is your favorite “hobbit” from J. R. R. Toliken’s Middle-Earth books? (submitted by Snapdragon @ Snapdragon Alcove)

Let me see… Of course, Frodo would be on that list. But I think my favorite is actually Samwise. His unerring loyalty and willingness to sacrifice anything for his friend is beautiful!

topic: Reading Relatibility

Real life can be a lot.

Do you enjoy reading books with high relatability to your past or present situation (i.e. with relatable characters, situations they face, or places they visit) or do you read purely to escape reality?

Most of the time, my own personal experiences don’t play a huge role in what I choose to read. There are exceptions, of course, but a lot of that involves choosing not to read a particular book. For example, there are books with certain themes that I don’t read, based on past traumas or experiences. But there are times when something I enjoy will play a role in the choice of a book. Like hockey… I love hockey, so I’m often drawn to hockey-themed stories. Other than that, I generally read to escape!

Do you seek out a certain type of read, depending on your head space or mood?

Absolutely. I’m a mood reader. And I’m generally reading no less than three books at a time, in different genres. Why? To feed any particular mood at any particular moment. Reading is one of my joys, and I covet it. It’s sometimes what keeps me sane in hard moments, so I feed whatever need I have with the books that fill it.

  1. I’ve started watching the next season of Call the Midwife and the the thought of how intimate their relationship with patients is quite unnerving. It is like the dendist asing questions while their hands are in your mouth. Ha!

  2. I also don’t pick up books based solely on their relatability factor, but I find I enjoy a story more when there is that connection to characters, events, or even places! I used to read multiple books at a time in previous years and I really miss doing that as a mood reader but sadly, right now, my attention span just can’t handle it, lol. It’s so great to be able to do that though! Maybe one day I will again :) Thanks for joining LTB this week!
