an excerpt

Toma commanded the attention of all guests, steering all eyes toward the stairway at the side of the room yet again.

“It is now time for the charity drawing. One female attendee will dance with Count Daegan as a gesture of goodwill to secure the funds for Our Lady of Lilies Orphanage.” He reached into the magician’s hat sitting on the podium beside him and pulled out a piece of paper.

The room fell silent.

Fiona could tell that every female attendee waited in anticipation for the next few seconds to pass. Shannon puffed her chest up and lifted her chin as though she’d made some secret arrangement with the count and would most definitely get the honor of the dance.

“Ah! Accompanying Count Daegan tonight will be”—Toma turned his gaze toward Shannon, and her smile widened. Fiona thought she’d burst from the excitement radiating off her body—“Lady Fiona Davenport.”

Shannon deflated, and Fiona froze.

Applause exploded around the room as all eyes turned her way.

“How convenient,” Angus said, lifting his wineglass in a mock toast.

Fiona glanced at Angus then turned to Shannon. The darkest look she’d ever seen on her sister marred her beautiful features.

“Well, have fun, dear sister.” Tears filled Shannon’s eyes just before she turned and shoved her way toward the opposite side of the room.

“Shannon, wait.” Fiona’s words fell on deaf ears and the backside of her sister.

“I’ll go make sure she’s all right,” Angus offered, “since I’m no longer necessary.”

A pang of guilt stabbed Fiona’s heart. She should’ve left the count hanging. Yes, that would’ve been the right thing to do, given the circumstances. However, this was a charity dance, and she didn’t want to be the one who caused commotion during something that would benefit so many of Ireland’s children in poverty, a cause close to her heart.

A Rachmaninov tune replaced the 1920’s music that had been the characteristic of the night’s setting, and the mood changed at once.

Count Daegan drifted down the stairs as though he were a figment of a dream, his dark clothing adding to the spell he held over everyone in the room, his gaze locked on Fiona.

Guests cleared a path as he walked through the crowd and headed toward her, stopping and bowing in front of the place where she stood glued to the floor, it seemed.

“Alone again, I see.” He met her gaze.

“I’m never by myself.” Wasn’t she, though? Abandoned by her sister and fiancé.

“Of course not.” He held out his hand.

Fiona blinked several times, swallowed hard, and then took it. As before, the room disappeared, and the dance floor contained only Fiona and the count. The dark intrigue of the tuba inside the music only helped wrap whatever spell this man had cast tighter around Fiona’s soul. Of that, she was certain.

Fiona succumbed to the count’s graceful lead. He moved perfectly in tune with the music and held her gaze without missing a beat. A powerful scent of something woodsy and ancient surrounded the couple, and Fiona’s gasp escaped her lips with an intensity that winded her.

Control yourself, Fiona. Your sister’s watching.

Why would you want to do such a thing?” the count asked. Only, his lips never uttered a word.

Fiona hesitated and skipped a beat. However, the count pulled the pair right back in step.

Who are you?” she asked in her mind … because she knew he could hear the question.

I’m no one and everyone at the same time.”

What kind of answer is that?

An honest one.”
